This book feels extremely topical right now, to say the least. George Woodbury, a beloved high school teacher in an upper-class New England town, is accused of sexual misconduct by several of his teenage students, disrupting his entire family's comfortable life.How would you react if your loved one was accused of a sex crime? This is an uncomfortable thought that people are realistically having to face with the incredibly important #MeToo movement underway. And it's the main focus of The Best Kind of People.George's highly competent ER nurse wife, his smart 17-year-old daughter, and his distant adult son are all forced to grapple with the reality that the beloved patriarch of their happy family may not be who they thought he was. It's an uncomfortable read, as you would expect from a book that explores the nuances of this subject matter.Many people who commit unforgivable crimes aren't sociopathic monsters. They're people with friends and loved ones, they're our neighbors and our acquaintances. And "good" and "bad" are rarely binary terms. It's possible for "nice family men" to do bad things—and it happens all the time. How do we reconcile that, especially if it's someone we know and love...a father or a husband?This is a gripping read all the way through, populated with well-developed and deeply human characters. I'm drawn to books that make me uncomfortable, and I appreciated this intricate take on how one person's actions can impact everyone around them profoundly and irrevocably. I’m not sure what the appeal is in writing books about horrible, unlikable, people. And no, I am not talking about the teacher embroiled in a sex scandal with students. I am talking about every single character in this book. It’s the type of book that makes you feel concerned about the psychological state of the writer. Who imagines people like this? What kind of person inhabits a fictional world of this manner?And its not just the horrible people that drag this novel down into unreadable territory. The narration itself is heavy, weighted. With every pointless setting detail and every description, the reader is pushed further towards detachment from a story that should have been easy to get caught up in. It is excruciatingly slow paced, and Zoe Whittall somehow manages to make a tabloid scandal boring. This is quite a feat in its own way, since even the most basic news articles on similar topics tend to hold a reader’s interest.I hardly know where to start, so let’s begin with Joan. As the accused teacher’s suffering wife, she is our best hope for a protagonist. Yet, Joan is so dis-likable I felt the need to take notes on exactly how offensive she is. This is the kind of woman who thinks first and foremost of money. She has just heard that her husband possibly cheated on her and possibly molested children, and her primary emotions relate to her bank account. On her first trip to visit her husband in prison, she is mostly worried about the appearance of her pantsuit. When attending a support group, she walks in and judges all the other women based on their appearance. She never bothers to read the police reports or know any details about the case against her husband. The reader is left wondering whether Joan was intentionally made to be horrible, or whether the author actually finds something redeeming about her shallow emptiness.Then, there is the total lack of detail regarding the MacGuffin holding the plot together. This is a novel that revolves around accusations against a male teacher. However, the reader is never privy to what the accusations were, what the case was, whether the accusations were believable etc. The teacher in questions sits in jail for the entire novel, conveniently "off-screen." There is absolutely nothing in this book that focuses on the case itself. 300 pages in and nobody has any clue what the details of the charges are, including the reader. In an unfortunate twist towards the meta, the author includes a character who is a writer and he is writing a book about the scandal (he is also a horrible person, in case you were wondering). This imaginary author’s publisher forces him to include details about the accusations, insisting that “there needs to be more conflict” and “it’s too confusing.” As I read this section of the novel I agreed wholeheartedly, but was perplexed about why Zoe Whittall would make the decision to write a novel devoid of conflict, and then point it out to the reader. Oh the irony of having an imaginary writer wonder, “How can I make this situation active?” in a book that is totally and completely devoid of meaningful action!Although the book does pick up a bit in the final pages, overall, this is a novel of tired clichés. Zoe Whittall seems to be the kind of person who believes that all men are secretly evil, everyone is being cheated on behind closed doors, and even the good guys aren’t really all that good. The author shies away from any detail that would be truly welcome or significant to the reader, leaving the most critical moments of the novel completely to the reader’s imagination, the characters flat, and the ultimate climax empty and unsatisfying.
